Produced between 1854 and 1859, it is estimated that 2,970 of these Sharps Model 1853 Slant Breech Sporting Rifles were manufactured. Blade front and New Military rear sights on the barrel (identical to one offered in the Sharps catalogue), marked "SHARP'S RIFLE / MANUFG. CO. / HARTFORD CONN." ahead of the rear sight. The lock plate is marked "SHARP'S/ PATENT/ 1852" behind the hammer and the upper tang "SHARP'S/ PATENT/ 1848" ahead of the serial number. Pellet primer system and double set triggers. Straight grip walnut stock and nicely figured forearm, with a pewter forearm tip, iron patch box numbered to gun, and iron carbine style buttplate, also numbered to the gun. The bottom barrel flat has "15442" lightly struck and "20981" and the inside of the forearm is numbered to the gun. The barrel was blue, and the remaining parts casehardened. Comes with a reproduction Sharps catalog.

Condition: Very good. The barrel has a smooth mottled brown patina. The receiver and hammer have areas of silvered out case colors mixed with smooth dark patina. The remaining surfaces have a smooth dark patina. The wood is also very good with overall scattered minor dings and dents. The markings are readable. Mechanically excellent.
