Scarce Sharps Model 1852 Slant Breech Single Shot Carbine

This is a very nice example of a Sharps Model 1852 single shot carbine. These were manufactured from 1853 to 1855 by Robbins & Lawrence of Windsor, Vermont, with a total production of approximately 4,997. These early Sharps carbines have the distinctive "slanting breech" type receiver and breech block, with the extra long sling bar on the left side of the carbine. The breech end of the barrel is marked: "SHARPS RIFLE/MANUF. & Co./HARTFORD CONN." with the upper tang marked "C. SHARPS/PATENT/1848" followed by serial number "5196". The lock plate is marked: "C. SHARPS/PATENT/1852" towards the rear. These early carbines are all fitted with the distinctive brass barrel bands, buttplate and patch box. The barrel is fitted with the original second pattern, squirrel ear rear sight with the fixed brass blade front sight. It is fitted with a walnut stock and forend, both have an oil finish. These early civilian carbines had a browned barrel and case hardened action.

Fine condition overall with half of the original brown finish with the balance now turning a gray patina on the exposed barrel with a dulled blue-brown patina color on the receiver, breechblock, tangs and loading lever. The stock and forend are both very fine with a nice dark matching oil finish overall with minor scratches and handling marks. The wood to metal fit is very fine. The action, lock plate and upper tang shows some very old peppery pin-prick pitting in some areas. The brass furniture has a nice mellow, old age appearance. An exceptional example of an early Sharps carbine!
