Scarce Sharps & Hankins Second Model 1862 Army Type Carbine

Manufactured 1862 to 1865, only about 500 Model Army Type carbines were made, approximately 200 were ordered by the U.S. Army. Standard receiver markings and the serial number is marked on the upper tang. The Army Type defers from the Navy Type in that it lacks the screws and screw holes in the breech end of the barrel for retaining the leather covering. Floating firing pin mounted in the recoil shield, saddle ring and bar mounted on the left side of the receiver, blade front and adjustable rear sights and mounted with a straight grip stock with a sling swivel and brass buttplate.

Fair. The metal surfaces have a mottled gray patina with some scattered minor pitting. The rear sight moves freely in the base and will not hold elevation positions. The stock is also fair with a couple shallow gouges, a few dents and dings. The markings are clear. The action is fine.
