Scarce Sharps & Hankins Model 1862 Army Carbine
Manufactured 1862 to 1865, this is one of only about 500 Model Army Type carbines made, approximately 200 were ordered by the U.S. Army. These carbines are chambered in 52 rimfire and a few Army Type carbines were made experimentally in other calibers. The left side of the frame is marked "SHARPS / PATENT / 1859", the right side is marked "SHARPS / & / HANKINS / PHILADA" and the serial number is marked on the upper tang. The Army Type defers from the Navy Type in that it lacks the screws and screw holes in the breech end of the barrel for retaining the leather covering. The Second Model has a floating firing pin mounted in the recoil shield rather than the firing pin on the hammer of the First Model. This carbine is equipped with the sliding safety and is absent of the saddle ring and bar. Blue barrel, casehardened receiver, hammer and lever/trigger guard and brass buttplate. Blade front and adjustable rear sights and mounted with a straight grip stock with a sling swivel and brass buttplate.

The lever is stamped "47", otherwise the visible numbers match.
