Scarce Sharps Bridgeport Model 1874 Business Rifle
Manufactured between 1876 and 1880, one of approximately 900 produced. The "Business 45" was introduced as a variant of the Sporting Rifle, chambered for the 45/70 2.1 inch straight cartridge. German silver blade front sight and a Lawrence folding, adjustable rear sight on the barrel, which is roll stamped "Old Reliable" in a panel followed by "SHARPS RIFLE CO. BRIDGEPORT CONN." ahead of the rear sight and "BUSINESS 45" behind. The receiver is fitted with double set triggers and has faint patent markings on the left side and serial number on the upper tang.

Good. The rifle barrel has an even brown patina with clear markings, scattered scratches but no pitting. The receiver, breechblock, loading lever and hammer have been cleaned and the casehardened finish has a mottled, silver-gray patina. The brass buttplate is a surplus earlier production sharps carbine part with a patch box cut-out and has been heavily polished. The stock and forearm show moderate to heavy handling wear. There is an old repair to the cracked tang. This appears to be a typical western working rifle which saw hard use but was not abused or altered. A good example of a scarce Sharps Model 1874 Sporting Rifle variation.
