Scarce Remington U.S. Navy Model 1867 Rolling Block Carbine
This is a very scarce example of a Remington Model 1867 Carbine from the lot of 5000 carbines manufactured for the U.S. Navy in 1868-1869. The carbine has a blued barrel, casehardened, barrel band, frame, hammer, trigger guard and buttplate with bright-finished breechblock. The stock and forearm are oil-finished walnut. The carbine has a two-leaf, folding, rear sight and sling swivels on the stock and forearm. The upper tang is roll-stamped with the two-line legend: "REMINGTONS ILLION N.Y.U.S.A./PAT. MAY 30th NOV 15th 1864 APRIL 17th 1866.". A U.S. Navy anchor inspection mark is stamped on the top of the barrel just in front of the frame. The right side of the frame is stamped with an anchor above a "P/F.C.W." inspection marks. The script initials "FCW" are stamped in a rectangle with rounded ends on the right stock wrist and an identical inspection mark is stamped on the right side of the forearm. "U.S." is stamped on the heel of the buttplate in front of the buttplate screw. At least 50% of the 5000 Navy Model 1867 Carbines were subsequently altered to other calibers or rifle configuration and unaltered carbines are scarce.

Very fine. The carbine remains in the original, as issued configuration and has a .50 caliber bore. The barrel retains more than 97% of the original blue finish. The casehardened finish on the barrel band, frame and trigger guard have some age darkening on contact points but have nearly 60% of the strong case colors. The case colors on the buttplate have aged to a dark patina. The stock and forearm are in very fine condition with scattered, minor, handling and storage marks and a chip on the belly of the forearm. The script "FCW" inspection marks on the stock and forearm are crisp. The Navy inspection marks on the frame and barrel are sharp. This is a very fine example of a scarce Remington U.S. Navy Model 1867 Rolling Block Carbine.
