Scarce Remington Model 1888 Transitional Single Action Revolver, #255, .44-40 cal., 5.75" barrel, nickel finish, smooth hardwood two-piece grips, standard fixed blade front and notched rear sight. Barrel address reads "E. REMINGTON & SONS. ILION, N.Y. U.S.A." Matching assembly numbers "62" are located on underside of the barrel and top of the ejector rod housing. "44" stamped on left side of the trigger guard. Serial number is located on the left side of the grip frame, under the grip. This rare Transition Model revolver is one of less than 1,000 produced between 1888 & 1889, after Hartley & Graham purchased Remington Arms Co. Also known as the "New Model Pocket Army". Overall condition is near fine, retaining approx. 75% original nickel finish, with the balance having worn to gray, primarily on the left side of the barrel, which shows mild pitting in the area of finish loss. There are intermittent shallow impressions visible on the cylinder. Otherwise, showing typical light scratches and marks associated with age and use. Left side of the frame, adjacent the grip, appears to have the initials "DS" scratched into the surface in cursive lettering. Barrel address and other factory lettering is well-defined. Hardwood grips are near fine with considerable oil finish remaining. Action is crisp. Bore is very good with scattered light erosion and clearly defined rifling. Est.: $2,000-$2,500.
