Estimate: $6000 - 8000
Manufacturer: Remington Arms Inc Model: Cane Gun
One of less than 2,000 produced between 1866 and 1888. Steel tip, with a silver finished brass post sight and a concentric circle marked firing stud emerging through the Gutta Percha veneer that covers the barrel and action, and a rear sight that pops up when the action is cocked. The dog's head is rendered in gilt finished brass, with the inscription "C.H. Stanley/Lockport/N.Y." along the right side of the neck and "1876" on top of the head. Lockport is both a city and a town in Niagra County, New York, on the route of the Erie Canal, and 1876 was the year of the American Centennial. Research indicates "C.H. Stanley" may be Charles H. Stanley. Born in 1842, Stanley participated in the Civil War as a Private in Company B, 1st Regiment, Maryland Cavalry. Following the war, he joined the Maryland Bar, and engaged in a political career that included being Mayor of Laurel, Maryland and Comptroller for the State of Maryland, as well as a business career which included serving as Director of the B&O Railroad, whose operations included West and Central New York State.
