Scarce Pre-War Dual Caliber Colt Single Action Army Revolver in .44 Russian and 44 S&W Special
Colt Single Action Army revolver manufactured in 1922. The revolver is chambered for the rarely encountered .44 Russian/.44 S&W cartridge. "THE BOOK OF COLT FIREARMS" by Sutherland and Wilson states that only 506 Colt Single Action revolvers were chambered for the .44 S&W Special cartridge and 154 in the 44 Russian cartridge which were added in 1890 and 1889 respectively. After January 10, 1913 all 44 Russian chambers would take the 44 Russian and 44 S&W Special cartridge. The barrel marking was changed accordingly an undetermined number of Single Action Army revolvers were marked with the dual caliber designation. The top of the barrel is marked with the two line address and the left side "RUSSIAN AND / S&W SPECIAL 44". The left side of the frame is marked with the two line, three patent dates followed by the Rampant Colt. The matching serial number is marked on the bottom frame and on the left side of the front and backstraps under the grips. Also the rear face of the cylinder is correctly numbered "01". The left grip panel has "341807" scratched into it. The revolver had the standard Colt blue finish on the barrel, ejector housing, cylinder, backstrap and trigger guard. The frame, loading gate and hammer had a casehardened finish. The revolver is fitted with checkered two piece hard rubber grips with the Rampant Colt at the top.

Good. All the metal surfaces have been cleaned bright and there is some scattered minor pitting. There is strong traces of original dark blue finish in the cylinder flutes and on the sides of the front sight. The oversized replacement grips are fair. The right panel shows heavy wear with most checkering smooth, crude "A" carved in the bottom and a small chip on the heel. The left panel shows moderate wear with a few minor dings. The markings are clear (crisp on the frame). The action is excellent.
