Scarce Plant's Second Model Iron Frame Front Loading Army Revolver
Manufactured in the mid-1860s, this Plant's Army revolver is a Second Model with the rounded iron frame, and a total production of only about 350. The revolver has a 6-inch ribbed barrel. Chambered for the 42 caliber cup-primed cartridge. The top of the barrel rib is marked "PLANTS MFG. Co. NEW HAVEN Ct" and the left side of the frame is marked "M&B/ N.Y." directly ahead of the cylinder. This unique design featured a combination of front loading and an exchangeable cylinder allowing for firing metallic cartridge or muzzle loading percussion. The percussion cylinder is in this and the ejector housing and ejector with a round knob handle are affixed to the right side of the frame behind the cylinder. Fitted with two piece varnished rosewood grips.
BBL: 6 inch octagon ribbed

Fine with 30% of the original high polish blue finish remaining on the barrel and 40% on the cylinder. The remaining metal surfaces are faded to a dark brown patina. The left grip has a repaired crack that runs diagonally from the top of the grip toward the frame. There is a small chip in the heel of the right grip. The refinished grips are in otherwise very good overall condition. The action functions fine.
