Scarce Pecare & Smith Ten Shot Pepperbox Pistol with Shielded Barrels

Estimate: $1600 - 2500
Manufactured circa 1850, this example has the silver plated brass frame with decorative scroll engraving on the frame and back strap, with the full shield over the barrels with the same style engraving, which has a small front sight. Interestingly the full shield over the barrels was designed to prevent the barrel cluster from being grasped and held to prevent use by an assailant. Marked on the shield "PECARE & SMITH'S/PATENT 1849" with the serial number "168" stamped on the shield ahead of the trigger notch. The shield is held in place by 4 small screws, three of which are missing on this example. Double action folding trigger stamped with the matching serial number. Fitted with walnut grips.
BBL: 3 1/2 inch multiple

Gauge: 28
Finish:
Grips: walnut
Serial Number: 168
Condition: Good with 50% original silver plate remaining on the frame. The cluster shield is an even brown patina with some scattered minor pitting, mostly on the left side of the shield, the markings are legible however somewhat faint. The grips are fair showing extensive wear and dings with the left panel having an old chip behind the frame and some gouges along the back edge. The action is not working properly. These are seldom found in any condition, very rare.
