Scarce Nazi Late War VK-98 Volksgewehr Rifle
This is a seldom encountered version of a late WWII German VK-98 or Volksgewehr rifle based on the final production of the standard K98 rifle. This version exhibits nothing more than the last throws of normal factory production in late 1945. These were a standard K98 which were produced without any barrel bands, or standard front and rear sights, and used a late war crude beech stock with a standard stamped trigger guard assembly. The top of the receiver is only stamped "bnz 45" and the barrel has a late Steyr proof on the right side along with the serial number on the left side. The top of the barrel has the crude front sight that was welded onto the top at the muzzle end of the barrel (properly counter bored) with a simple fixed rear sight dovetailed into the top of the front receiver ring. It has a standard late war unnumbered bolt with the standard K98 stamped box magazine and floor plate. The stock is the crude late war flat sided, "VK" beech stock with no buttplate and only the simple sling slot on the side and a simple wire loop through the front of the stock. The number "3" is stamped upside down on the right side of stock, forward of sling slot. At this point they were still being chambered in 7.92mm Mauser.
BBL: 24 inch round
Stock: walnut
Gauge: 7.92 mm Mauser
Finish: blue
Grips:
Serial Number: 5938
Condition: Excellent overall with 90% of a late wartime blued finish, thinning and browning in some spots. The stock is excellent overall with minor handling marks, nicks and light dings in a few places showing the late war crude finish and appearance. A very nice example of a late "last ditch" VK rifle.
