Scarce Model 1906 DWM Royal Portuguese Navy Contract Luger Pistol

Estimate: $6500 - 9500
This is an example of the First Contract Model 1906 DWM Luger pistol that was produced for the "Royal Portuguese Navy". This was the original contract model made before 1910 when the Republic of Portugal was established. It is estimated that a total of only 1,000 were produced, however the highest known serial number to date is 769. The top of the chamber is marked with the large "Portuguese Crown over a single fouled "Naval Anchor" with the "DWM" logo on the front toggle. This first model has the earlier 1906 style frame with grip safety, no stock lug, with the correct polished lower safety area (with no markings) and the "CARREGADA" marked extractor. The lower left side of the barrel extension is also correctly stamped with the Portuguese proof of "MP", with no other inspection or acceptance proofs. As noted this model is numbered in the correct commercial manner, with no letter suffix. It has the standard commercial finish and is fitted with an unmarked nickel plated magazine with a commercial wooden base that is re-marked "Cal 9m/m".
BBL: 4 inch round
Stock:
Gauge: 9 mm Luger
Finish: blue
Grips: walnut checkered
Serial Number: 345
Condition: Very fine with 80% of the original DWM factory rust blued finish overall, with the balance turning a dulled brown patina. The various small parts retain 60% of their straw colors overall. The grips are in very good condition with sharp checkering on both sides, showing even honest wear across the tops of the checkering with handling marks. This scarce variation, has all matching numbers except the firing pin, grips and magazine which are all correctly unnumbered. A scarce variation that would make a display with a second model Portuguese Navy offered in this auction.
