Manufactured circa 1880 it is unknown how many of these were made but they are considered scarce. Made by Hopkins & Allen Co. for Merwin Hulbert & Co. It features a five-shot cylinder with rare scoop flutes and standard loading gate. The top of the barrel rib is marked with the two line Hopkins & Allen address and patent dates. On the left side of the frame below the cylinder is the two line Merwin Hulbert & Co. address. The right side of the frame is marked "38 CAL." just below the cylinder. The serial number is stamped on the butt. The hammer and trigger have a casehardened finish. The hard rubber grips have decorative scalloped edging, checkering and a molded "dog's head" at the top of each grip panel.

Very fine, with approximately 90% of the original nickel finish remaining with some heavy flaking on the backstrap, right side of the frame under the cylinder and around the grip and frame juncture, otherwise some light flaking overall. There is some minor frost. The case color components exhibit a smooth dark patina. Mechanically needs work as the cylinder does not lock up. The markings are very faint. The grips are very fine with minimal handling marks. The checkering is crisp.
