Scarce Masuer Flatside 1896 Large Ring Semi-Automatic Pistol
This is an excellent example of a flatside variation Model 1896 Mauser pistol. These models were produced after the Italian Navy contract pistols and feature the flat unmilled sides of the frame with early features such as the large ring hammer, long extractor, one lug firing pin, late rear sight graduated from 50-1000 meters and the standard (non-reinforced) rear area of the barrel. The top of the chamber is marked: "WAFFENFABRIK/MAUSER/OBERNDORF/an" with the early Mauser Oberndorf antlered proof on the right side of the chamber with the single Crown "U" proof on the left side. It has the slotted rear grip strap with a set of walnut grips that have the 23 grooves on each side. It is complete with the lanyard ring on the bottom of the butt. The pistol has the pre-war rust blued finish with the straw colored trigger with heat blued finish on the extractor, rear sigh slide, safety lever and bolt stop.

Excellent overall with 95% plus of the original blued finish showing wear on the edges and high spots overall with some thinning on the sides of the barrel, the grip straps, and the sides of the frame in the magazine area. The grips are in excellent condition showing some minor handling marks with some minor thinning of the varnish on both sides. Mechanically excellent.
