Scarce Kansas Nebraska Handbill,
from the Indiana "American," 3 x 4.25". This notice alerted Hoosiers to the passage of the Kansas-Nebraska Bill that allowed those states to enter the Union and make their own determination as to whether or not they would allow slavery. The notice states that after the publication was already gone to press "... we received the painful, though not unexpected intelligence, that the Nebraska Bill has passed the House.-- It passed about midnight Monday night by a majority of THIRTEEN. -- 113 yeas 10 nays. J. H. LANE voted for it!" James Henry Lane was a Representative from Indiana from 1853 to 1855, when he, like so many others, moved to Kansas. There he was elected to the Senate in 1861.
Light scattered foxing. The notice was folded and has a small hole at intesection of folds. Old tape repair on verso.
