This is a representative example of a Civil War Joslyn Army Model, 5 shot .44 caliber percussion revolver that was manufactured circa 1861-62. The Joslyn Firearms Company of Stonington, Connecticut, manufactured approximately 3000 of these revolvers for the military. Almost all of the Joslyn revolvers went to the state of Ohio with the majority issued to the 5th and 6th Ohio Cavalry regiments. This standard model revolver features an iron trigger guard, solid frame, five-shot cylinder, sidehammer and checkered walnut grips. The top barrel flat is marked "B.F. JOSLYN / PATD MAY4th, 1858.". The matching serial number is stamped on the bottom of the flat iron buttcap, stamped inside each grip panel and bottom barrel flat under the loading lever, and the partial serial number "569" is marked on the loading lever and rammer link. The bottom of the frame ahead of the trigger guard plate is marked with a partial letter "C". The revolver is fitted with two-piece checkered walnut grips.
BBL: 7 5/8 inch octagon
Stock:
Gauge: 44
Finish: blue/casehardened
Grips: walnut
Serial Number: 2569
Condition: Fair as refurbished. The metal surfaces have been cleaned bright with traces of thin original blue finish in protected areas. The front sight blade has been soldered. The top rear frame has been welded back together and shows evidence of filing. The grips are very good with some scattered minor dings and dents and crisp checkering. The action is out of timing, otherwise functions properly. The markings are clear. Still, a representative example of a scarce Joslyn revolver.
