Scarce Jazz Pianist “Earl ‘Fatha’ Hines” Signed Photograph
EARL “FATHA” HINES (1903-1983). Jazz Pianist.
c. 1951, Black & White Photograph Signed, “Earl ‘Fatha’ Hines,” 8” x 10”, Choice Very Fine. A fantastic head-and-shoulders publicity photograph of the jazz artist, broadly smiling for the camera. Inscribed on the image in blue ink, “To June, Yours Sincerely, Lest We Forget Earl ‘Fatha’ Hines.” This photograph was most likely released in conjunction with his appearance opposite Louis Armstrong and Jack Teagarden in the MGM film “The Strip.” Scarce!
Hines, one of the most famous jazz pianists of his era, played in Chicago clubs in the 1920s, first as a soloist and later as a bandleader. He made several recordings with Louis Armstrong in the 1920s and 1930s, then joined Armstrong again in the late 1940s to tour with the All Stars. He made scores of recordings, including “Stormy Monday Blues” and “Second Balcony Jump,” and was still touring and recording into the 1970s. Known for his great technique and talent for improvisation, Hines’ horn-like phrasing and rhythm influenced popular jazz through the Swing Era and into Be-Bop.
