Scarce Gwyn & Campbell Type I Breech Loading  Grapevine  Carbine
This Type I (Grapevine) Union Carbine is one of 4,200 produced circa 1863. The carbine has a part round/part octagon barrel with a 900 yard base rear sight. The receiver has a lock plate screw on the right side in front of the hammer and is fitted with a lever latch with a trigger-like spur inside the bottom loop of the serpentine lever. Serial number along with the number "108" on the frame and barrel. Lock plate marked "GWYN & CAMPBELL / PATENT / 1862 / HAMILTON / O" and "UNION / RIFLE" marked vertically on the frame. Walnut stock with an iron crescent buttplate and traces of a cartouche on the left side of the wrist. These carbines were widely issued to Midwestern and Border State Federal cavalry regiments.

Condition: Fair. The lock plate, hammer, and frame have a smooth brown patina mixed with a smooth dark patina. The remaining surfaces have a smooth dark patina. There is some minor pitting. The stock is good with a deep gouge on the right side, along with some minor dings and scratches. Mechanically excellent.
