This is an example of a highly desirable Colt First Model Dragoon revolver that was manufactured in 1848, the first year of production. The revolver has the distinctive First Model oval cylinder stops and brass square back trigger guard. This was made for the commercial market due to silver plating on the trigger guard and back strap, and lack of inspection marks. The top of the barrel flat is marked "{ADDRESS SAMl COLT NEW-YORK CITY}" reading from the breech to the muzzle. The left side of the frame is marked "COLT'S/PATENT/U.S." The complete matching serial number is marked on the barrel, frame, cylinder, trigger guard, and back strap, the wedge and cylinder pin are marked with the partial serial number "915", and the correct matching assembly number "35" is marked on the bottom of the barrel and on the loading lever. Fitted with smooth one-piece walnut grip.
BBL: 7 1/2 inch part octagon
Stock:
Gauge: 44 percussion
Finish: blue/casehardened/silver
Grips: walnut
Serial Number: 1915
Condition: Very good. The metal surfaces have a gray patina with a small amount of very minor pitting on the barrel ahead of the cylinder and on the cylinder. The frame has a vertical casting flaw crack present between the hammer and trigger screw running from the top of the trigger guard to the bottom of the recoil shield. The trigger guard and back strap show traces original silver plating, (20%), mainly in the protected areas, with an aged patina on the balance. The cylinder scene remains strong. The grip is good with a minor chip on each toe, some wear on the lower edges and a few minor dings and scratches. The markings are crisp and clear. The action is excellent.
