Scarce FN-FAL G-Series Semi-Automatic Rifle with Telescopic Sight
A scarce example of the 1,836 G-Series FN-FAL rifles imported by Browning Arms Company between 1959 and 1962. Although the G-series FN-FAL have receivers that are capable of accepting select-fire components, BATF determined that they were not "machineguns" and could be imported and sold as semi-automatic rifles. The BATF reversed this ruling in 1963. In 1973, BATF issued a new opinion that exempted the 1,836 G-series FN-FAL rifles imported by Browning by serial number from the provisions of the National Firearms Act. This rifle is listed by serial number (G1570-G1784) on the BATF list of exempt FN-FAL rifles. This is a standard FN-FAL rifle with the long flash-hider with bayonet lug and walnut stock and forearm. The rifle has the early, "Type 1" receiver with milled lightning cuts. The rear sight is adjustable for elevation and the front sight is adjustable for windage. The barrel and receiver have a black finish. The left side of the receiver has the same "A/R/S" markings found on select-fire rifles and is marked "F.A.L. cal. 7,62.". The right side of the receiver is roll-stamped: "FABRIQUE NATIONALE D'ARMES DE GUERRE - HERSTAL BELGIQUE" in one line. The serial number, "G1614" is located on the bottom of the receiver between the magazine well and the hand guard. The partial serial number, "1614" is located on the left side of the frame and on the top of the bolt carrier. All of the serial numbers match. The rifle is complete with a Hensoldt military telescopic sight with mount and specially modified bolt cover. The scope has the European tapered post and cross-hair reticule with click-adjustable windage and elevation knobs. The scope has a black anodized finish The top of the elevation knob has the "HENSOLDT/WETZLAR" trademark and is serial numbered "2100". The top of the scope body is numbered "12-120-9556". The right side of the scope mount is numbered "76680". The scope is complete with a Hensoldt green canvas military scope case numbered "89698" on the lid. In addition to the telescopic sight, the rifle comes with one 20-round magazine and cardboard (non-factory) carton. The FN-FAL is widely considered to be the best 7.62MM, gas-operated, service rifle and was issued by more free-world armies than any other rifle. The G-Series FN-FAL rifles are the only service configuration FN-FAL rifles that were ever imported to the United States.
