Scarce Engraved Miller Percussion Pistol
This is an example of a .41 caliber percussion belt pistol manufactured by William Deeds Miller of Pittsfield, Massachusetts. The pistol features a 7-inch half-round/half octagon barrel with a rib supporting an iron ramrod ferrule. The stock is pinned to the barrel lug by a single silver plated wedge. The pistol has a German silver front sight and an iron rear sight on the barrel tang. The walnut stock is mounted with German silver forend cap, trigger guard and butt cap. The octagon portions of the barrel, the lock plate, hammer and barrel tang are decorated with light scroll engraving. The same scroll engraving is present of the top of the trigger guard and the finial. The lower portion of the lock is marked "WM. D. MILLER / MAKER / PITTSFIELD - MASS" and the top barrel flat is marked "WM. D. MILLER / PITTSFIELD - MASS". An un-inscribed silver name plate is inlaid on the left side of the stock. William Deeds Miller worked in Pittsfield from 1849 to 1867. In 1867 he moved to New York City where he worked until his death in 1876.

Very good. The metal surfaces have a smooth brownish gray patina with some flash pitting on and around the bolster. The silver has a pleasant, untouched aged patina. The stock is fine with much of the original varnish remaining and showing a few overall minor dents and dings. With exception to the area around the bolster, the markings and engraving are crisp and clear. The action is excellent.
