Scarce Early Production Winchester Model 1895 Flat Side Lever Action Rifle
This sporting rifle was manufactured in 1896, the second year of production and is 1 of the only 5,000 manufactured with the flat-sided receiver. This solid frame rifle is equipped with a Marble's number 6 blade front sight and two leaf folding rear sight on the barrel and an adjustable Lyman receiver mounted peep sight. The top of the barrel is marked "MANUFACTURED BY THE / WINCHESTER REPEATING ARMS CO. NEW HAVEN CONN. U.S.A." ahead of the rear sight and "38-72 W.C.F." at the breech. The upper tang is marked "WINCHESTER / MODEL 1895" and the serial number is marked on the lower tang. Directly behind the trigger is marked "PAT NOV. 5, 1895 / -- NOV. 12, 1895 --". It is fitted with a smooth tapered forearm with an ebony forend insert and straight grip stock with a steel crescent buttplate.

Condition: Fine as partially refinished (wood). The barrel shows a smooth brown patina with strong original blue in the protected areas around the forearm and a small patch of minor pitting near the rear sight. The receiver retains 50% original finish mixed with smooth brown patina and a smooth mottled gray patina on the lever and buttplate. The wood has been lightly sanded and refinished with a coat of varnish and shows several minor nicks on the upper right side of the forearm and overall a few minor dings and dents. The markings are clear. The action is very good.
