This Deluxe Winchester Model 1895 Lever Action rifle was manufactured in 1896, the second year of production and is 1 of the only 5,000 manufactured with the flat-sided receiver. This rifle has a full blue finish with fancy highly figured checkered walnut stock and forearm with oil finish. The barrel is fitted with a blade front and two folding leaf rear sights and a Lyman peep sight mounted on the left side of the receiver. The top of the barrel is marked with the two line address ahead of the rear sight and "303 BRITISH" at the breech. The upper tang is marked "WINCHESTER/MODEL 1895", the two line patent marking is marked directly behind the trigger and the trigger assembly and the serial number is marked on the lower tang. The accompanying factory letter verifies the rifle configuration, caliber, checkered pistol grip stock with oil finish, shotgun butt with rubber shotgun buttplate and a 26 inch barrel. The rifle was received in and shipped out of the warehouse to order number 3246 on February 5, 1898. Fine as modified. The shortened barrel has traces of blue with the balance a smooth brown patina. The receiver and magazine retain 40% plus original blue finish with a gray patina on the balance. There is some minor pitting on the top of and on the right side of the receiver. The wood is also fine with a few minor dings and scratches, and crisp checkering. The markings are clear. The action is fine.
