Scarce Documented Winchester Model 1892 Short Rifle

This is a Winchester Model 1892 Short Rifle with rare 20 inch round barrel. The rifle is accompanied by a Cody Firearms Museum Records Office letter that describes it as: "Rifle, caliber 32", with round, 20 inch barrel and plain trigger. The letter states that the serial number was applied on "2-21-1906". The rifle has a blue barrel, magazine, forearm cap and frame. The hammer, lever and crescent buttplate are color casehardened. The straight grain American walnut stock and forearm have an oil finish. The barrel has a dovetail mounted Sheard front sight with brass bead and a factory blank in the rear sight dovetail. A Lyman "DB" receiver sight is mounted on the left side of the frame. The upper tang is factory drilled and tapped. The rifle has a full length forearm. The top of the barrel is rollstamped "MANUFACTURED BY THE WINCHESTER REPEATING ARMS CO./NEW HAVEN. CONN. U.S.A. PATENTED OCTOBER 14. 1884." in two lines ahead of the rear sight dovetail. The caliber designation "32 WCF" is stamped on the top of the barrel just in front of the frame. Winchester oval "W/P" proofmarks are stamped on the top of the barrel in front of the caliber markings and on top of the frame. The upper tang is roll stamped with the second style model designation "MODEL 1892/-WINCHESTER-/TRADE MARK" in three lines. The serial number, "331074" is roll stamped across the bottom of the front of the frame. Model 1892 Short Rifles are scarce; most purchasers of short-barreled Model 1892 Winchesters preferred carbines.

Excellent. The barrel and magazine have 95% of the original blue finish intact with some minor edge wear at the muzzle. The frame has 85% plus of the bright original blue finish with edge wear on the sides and top and thinning on the bottom ahead of the lever. The top of the bolt has some cycling wear caused by contact with the rear sight. The hammer, lever and crescent buttplate retain 60% of the casehardened finish. All of the markings are crisp. The stock and forearm are both in excellent condition and retain 90% of the original oil finish. Wear is limited to a few minor handling marks and some finish wear on the forearm. The rear sight is missing the locking lever. This is an excellent example of a scarce Winchester Model 1892 Short Rifle.
