This is an example of a factory converted Model 1882 Sporting Rifle and this rifle is identified in Eugene Myszkowski's book THE REMINGTON-LEE RIFLE, page 36. Before 1888 Remington converted a number of Model 1882 actions to an improved version which included milling back the ledge on the right receiver wall to incorporate the new bolt head and extractor. It is estimated that 300 to 500 conversions were performed with all observed conversions in 45-70 caliber. This example has the 1879 patent date on the left receiver wall and the two line Remington marking followed by the serial number stamped on the upper left receiver flat. Combination Beach front and adjustable peep rear sights and mounted on a fancy checkered straight grip stock with a crescent buttplate. The stock has a cut-out on the left side for the magazine catch.
