The included Colt factory letter confirms the caliber, 3 1/2 inch barrel and blue finish with the type of stocks not listed. The revolver was shipped to M. Kennedy & Brothers of St. Paul, Minnesota, as part of a two gun shipment on March 23, 1885. Ejectorless Colt Model 1878 revolvers with a 3 1/2 inch barrel, like this example, are scarce. According to Colt expert Don Wilkerson in his book COLT'S DOUBLE-ACTION REVOLVER MODEL 1878, only 47 blue finished Model 1878s with a 3 1/2 inch barrel were manufactured by Colt (page 213). The top of the barrel is stamped with the two line Hartford address and the left side of the trigger guard is stamped "45 CAL." The serial number is stamped on the butt with the partial serial number "551" on the cylinder. The assembly "58" stamped on the loading gate. Fitted with checkered Rampant Colt grips. The right grip panel is numbered to another gun (3913) and the left grip panel is numbered to the gun (551).
