Winchester Model 1876 Deluxe Sporting Rifle manufactured in 1883. The rifle has a blued barrel with color casehardened forearm cap, frame, dust cover, hammer, trigger and crescent steel buttplate. The loading gate has a niter blue finish. The stock and forearm have a high polish varnish finish. Special order features include: (1) highly figured, "Fancy Grain" walnut pistol grip stock and forearm with "Style H" checkered panels and an ebony inlay in the pistol grip, (2) half magazine and (3) single set-trigger. The full octagon barrel is fitted with a dovetail mounted 'Winchester Express' front sight with silver beads and sporting style rear sight. The sliding brass trap in the buttplate contains a five-piece, jointed Winchester cleaning rod with brass tip. The frame has the third type dust cover with serrated sides and integral rail. The top of the barrel is roll-stamped with the two-line legend: "WINCHESTER'S-REPEATING ARMS. NEW HAVEN. CT./ KING'S-IMPROVEMENT-PATENTED-MARCH 29. 1866. OCTOBER 16.1860" ahead of the rear sight. "CAL 40-60" is stamped on the top barrel flat just ahead of the frame. The upper tang is roll-stamped with the designation: "{MODEL 1876.}" with foliate decorations. "40-60" is inscribed on the bottom of the brass cartridge elevator. The serial number, "54206" is stamped in small letters on the lower tang behind the loading lever latch.
BBL: 28 inch octagon
Stock: walnut checkered
Gauge: 40-60 WCF
Finish: blue/casehardened
Grips:
Serial Number: 54206
Condition: Very fine. The rifle retains 80% of the original blue and 60% casehardened finish. The blue finish on the barrel has faded slight to a plum-colored patina and the edges of the barrel have light finish wear. The frame, loading lever and hammer retains nearly 90% of the color casehardened finish. The case colors have faded slightly and there is some light 'frosting' on the right side of the frame. The case colors on the forearm cap and buttplate have a silver patina. The loading gate retains about 80% of the niter blue finish. The highly figured walnut stock and forearm are in very good condition. Nearly all of the original varnish finish remains. The checkered panels have some handling wear and there are scattered, minor, handling marks on both the stock and forearm. This is a very fine example of a completely original and very scarce Deluxe Model 1876 Sporting Rifle with special order features.
