This is a scarce example of the 1,400 Model 1909 Double Action Revolvers purchased by the U.S. Marine Corps in 1910. The barrel has the two line address/1884-1905 patent date marking on the top and "COLT D.A. 45" on the left side. The left side of the frame behind the cylinder latch is stamped with the rampant Colt trademark on the stylized "C" background. The serial number (23197) is stamped on the inside of the frame and crane with the butt stamped "U.S / No. / 97". Fitted with checkered grips featuring a diamond around the screw. The grips are numbered to the gun with "N. HAAS / KALAMAZOO / MICH. / DEC. 15-26" period marked in pencil on the back of the right panel and Hass' initials "NH" carved on the right panel at the top.
BBL: 5 1/2 inch round
Stock:
Gauge: 45 Long Colt
Finish: blue
Grips: walnut
Serial Number: 23197
Condition: Very good plus. The revolver retains 40% original blue finish with the balance a smooth brown patina. The grips are very good with a series of dings on the bottoms and period initials added to the right panel (as mentioned above). The left panel has an area of crude recheckering, otherwise the checkering is crisp. Mechanically fine.
