Scarce Colt Richards-Mason Conversion of the Model 1860 Army Revolver
Colt Richards-Mason Model 1860 Army Revolver with nickel plated finish and varnished, one-piece walnut grip. The hammer is casehardened and the trigger and screws have a niter blue finish. The 1860 Richards-Mason revolvers were not converted Model 1860 Army revolvers but new production metallic cartridge revolvers manufactured from un-numbered percussion parts in the Colt inventory. Colt manufactured approximately 2100 Richards-Mason 1860 revolvers in 1877-78. The revolver has the distinctive Richards-Mason features which include: (1) special barrel with no loading lever cut-out, (2) hammer with riveted firing pin, (3) breech plate with cut-away top and no provision for a rear sight, and (4) loading gate with external flat spring. The hammer has bordered knurling on the spur. The cylinder is roll-engraved with the Texas Navy scene and "COLT'S PATENT No." The top of the barrel is roll-stamped: "COLT'S PT. F.A. MFG. Co. HARTFORD, CT. U.S.A." in small letters reading toward the breech. The left side of the frame is roll-stamped: "-PAT. JULY.25.1871-/- PAT. JULY. 2. 1872.-" in two lines. "44 CAL" is stamped on the left trigger guard shoulder. The serial number, "6622" is stamped on the bottom of the barrel lug, the frame, trigger guard and backstrap. The cylinder is stamped with the partial serial number "622". All of the visible serial numbers match. The loading gate is stamped with the assembly number "697". Two deep and very old notches have been filed in the right grip heel.

Very fine. The revolver retains 75% plus of the original nickel-plated finish. There is scattered light pitting and some finish loss on the barrel at the muzzle and on the forward portion of the cylinder. The hammer retains about 90% of the casehardened finish. The trigger and screws have a substantial amount of the niter blue finish. The cylinder retains nearly 90% of the roll-engraved naval scene. The grip is in fine condition with about 60% of the original varnish finish and deep scattered handling marks on the grip sides, heels and butt. The barrel and frame markings are crisp. The action is tight and functions perfectly. This is a very fine, original, example of a scarce Colt Richards-Mason 1860 Army Revolver.
