This is an eample of a Colt Patent Model 1839 Revolving Carbine that was manufactured at the Colt Paterson, New Jersey, factory circa 1838-1839. The Model 1839 Carbine was the most successful of the Colt Paterson firearms; approximately 950 were manufactured before the production ceased at the Paterson factory in 1841. This early production carbine, serial number 81, was made prior to 1840 and features the first style square back six-shot cylinder, 32 inch part-round barrel with no loading lever, and capping groove in the upper right side of the flared recoil shield. The barrel lug has a transverse slot that passes through the lug behind the wedge. The barrel has a dovetail mounted block rear sight and a nickel-silver pin front sight. The carbine has a scroll-shaped iron trigger guard and well-figured, varnished walnut stock with iron buttplate. The right side of the barrel lug is roll-stamped "- Patent Arms M'g. Co. Paterson, NJ.-Colt's Pt.-" with wavy lines at either end. The cylinder was roll-engraved with hunting and battle scenes in three oval panels and Colts patent markings. The serial number "81" is visible on the rear face of the cylinder.
BBL: 32 inch part round
Stock: walnut
Gauge: 525
Finish: brown
Grips:
Serial Number: 81
Condition: Good as refinished. The carbine retains traces of blue finish on the receiver; the balance of the barrel is an artificial brown finish. The right side of the lug shows moderate handling wear and the markings are light but fully legible. None of elaborate roll-engraved scenes or markings are visible on the cylinder and the cylinder has a smooth gray-brown patina. The frame, trigger guard and buttplate have a brown patina. The crude period replacement stock has much of the applied gloss varnished and remains good overall. The action functions properly. This is a solid example of a scarce Colt Model 1839 Carbine.
