Scarce Colt Model 1911A1 Transitional Model Semi-Automatic Pistol

This is a beautiful example of an original and very early production Colt "transitional" Model 1911A1 pistol as manufactured in 1924. These transitional models fall into the serial number range of 700,001-710,000 and were a fairly short production model that ushered in the start of the Model 1911A1 pistol production. This exact pistol was shipped in the very "first" serial number block from Colt in January 1924 to the Commanding Officer Springfield Armory. The pistols retained the Model 1911 slide markings but were produced with the 1911A1 improvements as follows: an extended grip safety tang, a checkered arched mainspring housing, radius clearance cuts machined into the frame behind the trigger, a short trigger with a knurled face and a wider front sight blade. The slide is stamped with the Colt two-line/two-block 1897-1913 patent dates, followed by the factory address with the Rampant Colt logo between the two blocks, with the right side roll-stamped "MODEL OF 1911 U.S. ARMY", and the slide is correctly not numbered on the rear. The right side of the frame is stamped "UNITED STATES PROPERTY/No 700792" with the left side stamped with "WTG" the U.S. Ordnance, inspector's initials of Captain Walter T. Gordon. The top of the frame is stamped with an "H" provisional inspection mark along with a "G" government production order mark. This early pistol is fitted with the correct early transitional blued barrel that has the conjoined "HP" proof on top of the chamber with the letter "K" on the underside of the stepped barrel in front of the lug. It is fitted with the early, correctly checkered slide stop, checkered thumb safety, arched and checkered mainspring housing and the wide spur hammer. The pistol has the brush military blue finish and is fitted with the full-checkered walnut grips as adopted in 1924 and is complete with one unmarked, half-tone blued magazine.

Gauge: 45 ACP
Finish: blue
Grips: walnut checkered

Excellent with 98% of the original blue finish overall with only very minor edge and high spot wear overall. The grips are also in excellent condition with excellent, distinct checkering on both sides with only some very minor wear across the top of the checkering. Mechanically excellent. This is one the best Colt Model 1911A1 transitionals we have in this for sale, and would be difficult to upgrade.
