Scarce Colt Model 1860 Army Revolver with Thuer Conversion Cylinder and Ivory Grips

Manufactured in 1868. Thuer conversions were done circa 1869-72 with a total of approximately 5,000. The Thuer conversion was Colt's first production of revolving firearms chambered for a metallic cartridge. The top of the barrel is marked "-ADDRESS COL. SAML COLT NEW-YORK U.S. AMERICA-". "COLTS/PATENT" is stamped on the left side of the frame and "44 CAL" is marked on the left trigger guard shoulder. The cylinder is roll-engraved with the Texas Navy battle scene and "COLTS PATENT No 730", (both very faint). The complete serial number is stamped on the bottom of the barrel lug, frame, trigger guard and back strap. The cylinder pin is marked "730" and the wedge is un-numbered. The rear face of the cylinder and the conversion ring are marked with the assembly number "8". The Thuer conversion ring has a script "E" which denotes the eject position. The right side of the barrel lug is machined to permit front loading of the cartridge. The cylinder has been shortened to accommodate the conversion ring. The conversion ring has the distinctive knurled turning knob, rebounding firing pin, and ejection mechanism. Blue barrel, cylinder and back strap, casehardened frame, hammer and loading lever, and silver plated brass trigger guard. Brass blade front and hammer notch rear sights, and fitted with a one-piece ivory grip with a small silver circle inset into each side.

Good. The moderately worn metal surfaces have a mottled brown patina. The back strap is moderately pitted and there is some minor pitting on the barrel and cylinder. The trigger guard has an aged patina. The grip is fine having shrunk with age, showing some minor age cracks on the bottom and a pleasant caramel color and attractive grain. The markings are readable and the cylinder scene is lightly visible. The action is fine. Thuer conversion revolvers are scarce and historically significant firearms.
