Scarce Colt Belt Model Paterson Revolver

Colt Belt Model Paterson revolver (No. 3 Paterson) manufactured between 1838-39. This early production Belt Model Paterson Revolver has the medium sized frame with rounded corners contoured to the lug, scarce five-shot cylinder with square back, .34 caliber barrel with eleven groove rifling and two-piece varnished walnut straight back grips. The revolver does not have the recoil shield capping cut-out or the loading lever found on later production Belt Model revolvers. The top of the barrel is roll stamped with the script legend "- Patent Arms M'g Co Paterson N-J Colt's Pt.-" in one line reading towards the muzzle. The cylinder is roll engraved with "COLT" in the horse head motif and the Centaur scene. The serial number "200" is stamped on the face of the barrel lug below the arbor pin hole, the barrel wedge, the breech end of the cylinder, the cylinder turning ring, on the left side of the trigger and the bottom of the right grip heel. All of the visible serial numbers match. The No. 3 Belt Model revolvers were serial numbered with the No. 2 Belt Model pistols; total production of both types is estimated at approximately 800 revolvers. Surviving examples are very scarce.

Good. The revolver has a good-looking gray patina overall. The barrel has sharp rifling and crisp edges and markings. The barrel has light surface wear with some scattered dents and light pitting. The frame has a silver-gray patina with shallow pitting on the grip straps and sides. The sides and face of the hammer have moderate flash pitting. The cylinder has a dark gray patina and retains 95% of the roll engraved scene. There is scattered flash pitting on the face and rear of the cylinder and moderate flash pitting on the percussion nipples. The grip is good overall and shows moderate handling wear. This is a solid example of a scare and very desirable Colt Belt Model Paterson revolver.
