Scarce Civil War Remington "Split-Breech" Carbine, Type II, NVSN, .50 CF cal., 20" round barrel has fleur-de-lis "M" and other tiny marks at breech, with carbine sights; large receiver has central rolling breechblock/hammer, left-side sling ring/bar, maker's name, address and 1863-64 patent dates at upper tang; forend of oil-finished walnut has single spring-retained band, matching buttstock a sling swivel at belly, buttplate marked "US" and "M" at top, 3 "encircled dot" marks impressed each side and a name scratched at right. Mfg'd ca. 1865-66. Condition is very good retaining traces of barrel blue and silvered case colors, else lightly oxidized gray gunmetal with fine edges and markings. Stocks are sound having minimal marks and pleasing finish. Forerunner of the famed Rolling-Block Remington guns and very scarce, as most were sold to France for the Franco-Prussian War.
