Scarce Civil War Joslyn Army Model Percussion Revolver

This is an example of a Civil War Joslyn Army Model, 5 shot .44 caliber percussion revolver that was manufactured circa 1861-62. The Joslyn Firearms Company of Stonington, Connecticut, manufactured only about 3,000 of these revolvers for the military. Almost all of the Joslyn revolvers went to the state of Ohio with the majority issued to the 5th and 6th Ohio Cavalry regiments. This standard model revolver features an iron trigger guard, solid frame, five-shot cylinder, sidehammer and checkered walnut grips. The top barrel flat is marked "B.F. JOSLYN/PATD MAY4th, 1858.". The matching serial number is stamped on the toe of the back strap, the front strap under the grip, on the inside of each grip panel and on the bottom barrel flat at the breech. The loading lever is numbered 852" and an "8" is visible on the rammer link. The bottom of the frame ahead of the trigger guard plate is marked with what appears to be "S G". Fitted with two-piece checkered walnut grips.

Fair. The metal surfaces have a smooth dark patina. The grips are fair with numerous chips, age cracks and scratches. A crude "JCK" and "GOLD" are carved on the bottom of the grips. The markings are faint, but readable. The action functions, but is out of time.
