Scarce Civil War Era Matching Pair of Gunnades, marked ''A.K.E.R. 1863'', approx. 36'' long, 47'' overall, 26'' high & 27'' wide. The use of gunnades was almost totally confined to merchant ships and privateers. They could fire a large ball relative to barrel size, or things as simple as a handful of rocks. They did not require a large crew and could be loaded quickly. The muzzle is funneled for fast loading. Many merchant companies required that ships carrying their cargo have them on board. They were also known as ''insurance guns''. Privateers could use them as well to raid enemy ships, as they were legally considered mercanery ships. Condition is about fine, although some of the nomenclature is difficult to discern. The sea carriages have been reproduced from the original type white oak and fittings are later blacksmith made. The barrels are 100% original and the touch holes have never been spiked. Est.: $20,000-$30,000.
