Scarce Cased WWII Japanese Army or Naval Cannon Bore Sighting Device
This is a very rare WWII Japanese Army or Naval cannon bore sighting device that is complete with it's original wood carrying/storage case. The scope itself is approximately 29 inches long with a 2 1/2 inch tube diameter that has a standard cross-hair reticule pattern with no mil-staid for range finding. The front portion of this scope has a smooth blued tube with a brass objective end. The rear portion of the scope is a machined steel housing assembly that is painted black, and has a small white metal label screwed on top with a series of Kanji markings at the top and bottom of the label with Japanese inspector proofs stamped in various places. The middle of the label marked "2908/4.6/1911". Farther back the housing is marked on top, "15X2.5 degree/"NIKKO/No2908" and the ocular end has a focusing adjustment. The front section of this steel housing has a protruding tube with a screw on cap that appears to function as a means to insert a small light that would probably provide a means to light up the reticule for night firing. It appears that the tube would have been inserted into a fixture that would have been inline with a cannon tube or tank barrel and that would have served as a bore or sighting device. The complete scope is fitted in a very nicely made wood storage case with a small white label affixed to the front, identical to the one on top of the steel housing with a blue 4X4 inch label on the inside lid. This label appears to be makers and or factory inspection label. It is complete with an extra set of rubber eye-pieces and two-small glass eye caps along with an adapter for the protruding tube on the housing.
