Scarce Cased Air Cane with Pump, #NVSN, .32 cal., 20" barrel, black finish to the body with brass fittings and an ivory screw-on handle cap. Lower section of the cane features small, fixed sights and a brass tip that must be removed prior to firing. Iron pump has brass fittings and removeable iron handle. Body of the pump with remnants of a makers mark, partially legible as obscured by wear and pitting is "Co. 7 Bernard St. South Hampton". There are no legible markings on the cane itself. Included are a brass capped glass bottle for oil/grease, an ornate iron key for cocking/firing. All contained in a compartmentalized wood case, with green baize interior. Case is 24" in length, 6" in width, and 2.5" in depth, with a 7" x 4.5" label attached to the middle of the inside cover proclaiming "JOHN RIGBY & Co. 24. SUFFOLK STREET, DUBLIN, PATENTEES GUN & RIFLE MANUFACTURERS". The cane itself shows much wear to the black finish, with frosted oxidation to most of the exposed metal surfaces. Brass is uncleaned, showing expected patina. Ivory has taken on a pleasing yellow hue with age. Pump also remains uncleaned with dark patination to the iron surfaces, especially the handle. The threaded handle is easily attached and pump action moves freely. Wood case is good for its age, showing beautiful grain patterns to the hardwood, with an unmarked brass circular medallion inset into the middle of the lid and two metal lid retaining levers showing toning from age. Rear brass hinges are complete and securely hold the lid attached to the cases base. There is a larger mar to the front edge of the lid, as well as evidence of repair, with glue visible along the front seam. Interior label is yellowed from age but clearly legible. Interior shows age and wear that is consistent with the rest of the case. Included with this set is a typewritten summation of the workings of an air cane, also stating the piece was made by John Blanch (London 1801-1900) and was once part of the Beeman collection. Est.: $1,800-$2,400. (No FFL Required) (Michael Strietbeck Collection)
