Scarce Case V-42 Commando Dagger with Replacement U.S.M.C. Marked Sheath

Modeled after the Fairbairn-Sykes Dagger, the Case V-42 was made for issue to the 1st Special Service Force, a Canadian-American composite unit trained for arctic warfare. Small numbers of V-42 knives were also issued by the U.S. Navy to Marine Raider Battalions and Ship Landing Units. Measuring 11 3/4 inches overall, the double edged blade is 6 5/8 inches long, with a serrated thumb rest and "CASE" on the obverse ricasso. Fitted with a leather padded thin oval guard, a ribbed leather washer grip, and a flared and pointed "skull crusher" pommel. With a brown leather "U.S.M.C./MOOSE CO./1943" sheath with steel reinforced tip.

Very good overall. The tip of the blade has been reshaped, with the hollow grind of the edges transitioning to a chisel grind, while retaining the overall profile of the blade. Mild pitting is present, concentrated along the high edges. The hilt is very good, with some cuts and scratches on the guard pad, the guard polished bright, scuffing on the grip and some spotting and pitting on the pommel. The sheath is good as professionally shortened, with some stains and scuffs. A rare piece of early Special Forces equipment, scarce in any condition.
