2pp, approx. 8" x 10", n.p. stated, 18 Oct. 1856. Modoc War Discharge for William Woosley, "a packer," discharged by reason of the expiration of his term of service, having served eighty seven days. This is probably from the Cayuse War, started in 1848. The Yakima War, which covered most of the Oregon and Washington Territories as well as part of Northern California, is generally dated 1856 - 1858, and may be continuous with the Cayuse/Palouse Wars. This late 1856 document may be from the Yakima campaigns. What the history books would come to refer to as the Modoc (or Lava Beds) War would come nearly two decades later, in 1872-1873, but they could not have known that back in the 1850s.
