Scarce Black Powder Colt Single Action Frontier Six-Shooter Revolver
This is a desirable example of a Colt .44-40 "Frontier Six-Shooter" Single Action Army Revolver that was manufactured in 1880. The revolver has the very desirable "COLT FRONTIER SIX SHOOTER" markings acid etched in an oblong panel on the left side of the barrel. The top of the barrel is roll-stamped: "COLT'S PT. F. A. MFG. CO. HARTFORD CT. U.S.A." in one line. The underside of the barrel is stamped with the caliber designation "44". The left side of the frame is roll-stamped with the Colt "Three date/Two Line" patent markings and the left front trigger guard bow is stamped "44. C.F.". The assembly number "1240" is stamped on the inside of the loading gate. The full serial number, "56739" is stamped on the bottom of the frame, trigger guard and the backstrap. The partial serial number "6739" is stamped on the side of the cylinder. All of the visible serial numbers match. A small Colt "H" inspection mark is stamped in the hammer slot above the firing pin hole. Two "J" inspection marks are stamped between the chambers on the rear face of the cylinder. The revolver has a 'bull's-eye' ejector rod head and late civilian hammer with fine grain knurling with no border on the spur. The one-piece walnut stock has a varnish finish.

Gauge: 44-40 WCF
Finish: blue/casehardened
Grips: walnut
Serial Number: 56739

Very good plus. The revolver has an attractive steel gray patina overall with scattered patches of discoloration on the barrel, frame and trigger guard. Traces of the original blue and casehardened finish remain in protected areas. The cylinder has a darker patina with some pitting on the front edges. The hammer is a later production replacement with most of the original case colors. The delicate, acid etched, "FRONTIER SIX SHOOTER" markings on the left side of the barrel are light but legible. The other markings and serial numbers are clear. The stock is good condition with a large flat spot on the left heel and several small dents on the butt. The stock retains 80% of the original varnish finish. The action is tight and functions fine. This is a solid, attractive, example of a scarce and very desirable Colt "FRONTIER SIX-SHOOTER" Single Action Revolver.
