albumen image, Keller, Helena (MT). With J.X. Beidler, 1880 on verso. This image of Beidler comes on the market occasionally. He wears a coat and plainsmen's hat - a classic Westerner.

John X. Beidler (1831-1890) was born in Pennsylvania and migrated West to Kansas before the Civil War. Siding with John Brown's border ruffians, he left Kansas for Texas when Brown went to Harper's Ferry, and eventually settled in Virginia City, Montana in 1863. According to Thrapp (1988:89) ....he gravitated towards the Montana Vigilante Committee and became famous among them. Unlike many who sought anonymity, Beidler apparently basked in the attention, and was prominent in his pursuit and elimination of desperadoes. He gained much of his reputation by hunting down and hanging 22 members of the Plummer gang in 1863. The gang attacked Beidler to free George Ives and cohorts, who had been legally sentenced to death for the murder of a deputy sheriff, on the scaffold.
