Manufactured from the late 1870s to early 1880s with total quantity for all variations estimated at several hundreds. "HOPKINS & ALLEN M'F'G Co/PAT. MCH 28.71 MAY 27.79" is roll-stamped on the top strap to the right of the sighting groove and "XL NO. 8/CAL. WINCHESTER 1873" is stamped on the left side of the sighting groove. The serial number is marked on the left side of the frame under the grip panel. Nickel plate with casehardened hammer and trigger guard and fitted with checkered grips with a lanyard ring on the butt. The XL Army and Navy are considered to be the finest quality handguns made under the Hopkins and Allen name and a traditionally classed as secondary martial with no evidence of military/government orders.

Very fine. The revolver retains 75% plus original nickel finish with a smooth gray patina on the balance. Hammer retains some vivid original case colors. The grips are excellent with a few minor handling marks and overall crisp checkering. Mechanically excellent.
