HENRY CLAY (1777-1852). American Lawyer, Planter, and Statesman who represented Kentucky in both the United States Senate and House of Representatives, “War Hawk” Negotiator for the United States concluding the War of 1812 resulting in advantageous The Treaty of Ghent with Britain.
June 30, 1851-Dated, Autograph Letter Signed, "H. Clay", 1.5 pages, measuring 6.75” x 8.25”, Ashland (Lexington, Kentucky), Fine. Written just one year before his death, Henry Clay writes to Jared S. Dawson, Esq. inquiring about money due him from various pieces of land which Dawson has sold for him in February of 1849. It reads, in part: "I have been waiting anxiously to hear from you… I am quite sure that the only remitances or payments you have made to me are $600 -- $500 -- $150 -- $100 & $100 the last handed to me at Washn by your friend… which is less than 200 acres of the land sold for…" Fine 1” edge tear at top, some minor fold splits, and light dampstain down right side does not affect its legibility. The signature “H. Clay” at the conclusion on the verso is boldly written in brown measuring 1” long with his flourish below. A scarce, quite long and detailed financial related letter.
