Savage model 1899 factory special order lever-action rifle, .303 Savage caliber, 24” half round half octagon barrel, fancy checkered deluxe walnut stock with “C” grade checkering, factory “A” engraved, silverplaque period or factory inlaid in left side of buttstock with initials “HBW” and silver buttplate, Savage adjustable rear sight, silverplated lever. Factory information from Roe S. Clark, Historian, to noted collectorVern Ott states indicates this rifle was originally shipped with a round barrel to Robert’s Hardware, Utica, New York, Sept. 8th, 1904, returned to the factory, reshipped to H. B. Williams, August 30th 1905 and name Litven Truning appears in the entry. This Savage rifle belonged to Herbert B. Williams, whose stage name was Wild Burt and was an exhibition shooter who appeared in many Wild West Shows with his wife, who appeared underthe stage name “Little Sure Shot”, whose deluxe Marlin rifle is included as the next lot in this sale. A notarized affidavit from Sharon M. (Williams) Potter states she is the grand-daughter of Herbert B. and Sarah F.
