Sauk & Fox Missouri War Axe Tomahawk c. 1870-1880
This is a rare & important circa 1870-1880 Missouri War Axe Tomahawk attributed to the Sauk & Fox Native American Indians. The piece features an excellent forged iron head measuring 8.5 inches in length having a large elongated weeping heart cut-out in the center of the blade. The hard wood haft is wonderfully decorated with brass trade tacks and two small wraps of otter fur along with old red trade cloth near the gripping section. The tomahawk has a thick long braided Indian tanned Buffalo hide wrist thong drop attached to the bottom end of the tomahawk in the pierced hole. The piece shows very good to fine well preserved museum quality condition and displays exceptionally. The authentic piece has a total length of 19.5 inches.
