ALS in French, signed “Sarah,” one page, 3.25 x 4.5, personal letterhead, no date [August 1889]. In full (translated): "Jacques [Damala] is dead. This very night. I beg of you come and help me with what ever there is to be done about the press. I kiss you." Matted and framed with an artistic portrait of Bernhardt to an overall size of 14.5 x 12. In fine condition. Damala died in Paris on August 18, 1889, following an overdose of morphine and cocaine. When Bernhardt was alerted of his demise, she is cited as saying–presumably out of mercy for his condition–'Well, so much the better.' She kept Damala as her legal name until she died in 1923.
