<B>Mdewankton Sioux Granite Head War Club descended in Chief Cloudman's family</B></I><BR>Circa 1875<BR>Length 22 in.<BR><BR>This unusual club is made with a granite head, half of which has been polished, fitted to a wood handle. The handle is wrapped with painted rawhide salvaged from a parfleche case and laced with sinew. There is a tuft of black horsehair at the end of the haft and a wrist strip also fashioned from the parfleche.<BR><BR>Provenance<BR>This is one of three war clubs given to Sheriff Thomas Card Johnson of Knox County Nebraska. His mother, Mary Taliaferro, was the daughter of Chief Cloudman, whose village was at Lake Calhoun in present day Minneapolis. Her autobiography is on micro-film at the Minnesota Historical Society.
