This cabinet card measures 7” X 4 7/16” mounted on a black matte that measures 7 ½” x 5 ¼”. Medium contrast due to yellowing and focus is good. Minor wear on edges. A small gouge about a ½” long is located in the center of the photo, it is deep enough to appear on the reverse side of the photo. It seems as if the matte and part of the photograph has been “cropped” on both left and right sides, where part of the title has been cut off. On the reverse is a very detailed description of Southern California and its products as well as brief railway description on the wharf. Foxing is clearly shown throughout the photograph and mostly at the top. Photographed by Pierce & McConnell. Charles Pierce was active in Los Angeles and had his own studio as he partnered with McConnell at 515 North Main Street from the late 1800s to the early 1900s. This is a photo of the Santa Monica Wharf in California. Towards the shore, a train is seen and about six or seven men. It shows almost a bird’s eye view of the Southern Pacific railroad Long Wharf at Santa Monica called the “Port Los Angeles”. The wooden made wharf commenced in 1892 and finished in 1894 and was used for shipping purposes. It was turned over to pacific Electric Railway in 1913 and shipping ceased.
